A new-laid clutch, a softer touch,

Brings new life to the world.

Yes, some stress and a bigger mess,

Then when the daft bird hurled!

To sing under-wing till a time,

They think that they are grown.

Then off they will flee, and he will be,

Again, left all alone.

The End

Cuthbert’s Catastrophe.

By Lynne Phillips.

Cuthbert knew he was in trouble when he couldn’t remember the spell to change the cat back.

He thought it would be fun to teach Gargoyle a lesson for always hissing at him. It never entered his head that the silly enchanted cat (now a rat) would take fright and scamper under the cupboard and out of sight before he could retract the spell. Nor did he consider the words to bring the cat back would fly out of his head in the excitement that followed, as the fleeing rat scampered out of sight.

“Here Puss. Naughty cat, where are you?” His mother, Esmerelda, Queen of the Faerie Kingdom’s voice echoed through the corridors of the castle. She was searching for her favourite cat, Gargoyle.

Cuthbert knew his mother would be upset if her pet disappeared forever. He had to remember that spell!

Aged ten , the younger of two sons, Cuthbert had the gift to cast spells, as did his older brother. However, while sixteen-year-old Max was an expert, Cuthbert hadn’t fully mastered the skill. Not being able to remember the counter-spell was a disaster!

“Abra catabra, no, no abra cattarabbra! Oh, no, this is a catastrophe,” Cuthbert muttered as he searched his memory for the reverse spell.

“Oh, for goodness’ sake, what are the right words? Catta barra?”

Cuthbert inspected his hands. Soft black fur appeared on his fingers and raced up his arms. Whiskers sprouted from his nose and he could feel a tingle in his backside where a tail was sprouting.

“Oh, no, not me. I don’t want to be a cat. Catta barra reverse!”

His nose twitched as the whiskers fell to the ground; the fur faded from his arms and the tingle disappeared from his pants.

“At least that’s one calamity averted.” Cuthbert sighed with relief.

“Unfortunately, it still leaves the dilemma of finding Gargoyle and turning him back into a cat before mother discovers what I’ve done,” he muttered, as he lifted the curtain and peered underneath. Several small beetles scurried away but there was no sign of Gargoyle.

The love-hate relationship between Cuthbert and Gargoyle began when Cuthbert found the cat, as a tiny kitten, being swept along the river. Heavy rain had turned it into a raging torrent. The black ball of fur tossed and turned as the churning water carried the tiny bundle towards the sea until a tree uprooted by the violent current, crashed into the water. Cuthbert watched as the kitten clung to the branch, where it sat shivering; a tiny wet mass of miserable black fur.

You would think the half-drowned kitten would appreciate Cuthbert clambering along the fallen tree to rescue it. The water almost swept him off several times but the frightened animal hissed, its green eyes flashed. Scratches covered Cuthbert’s hands
